The starting point can be an old master, and the pictures aim to bring together the structure of those paintings with improvisation and accident. They can look good and fresh after one or two sessions, and the task after 100 sessions is to get back to that freshness without contrivance. Difficult. Jazz music, which I play, involves a similar tension, between structure and spontaneity. I trained at Goldsmiths back in the day, and remain a student.
